Our History
Travelers Aid Society has been serving the San Diego region since 1901, with robust programs that support travelers in need of assistance and support, and for our most vulnerable community members who need access to transportation. We are proud of our longevity, our ability to rise to meet the needs of specialized populations, and our role in the fabric of San Diego’s social service safety net. Please see our timeline below for an illustration of bookmarks in our history.

The Travelers Aid movement began when philanthropist and former St. Louis mayor Bryan Mullanphy left a large bequest to help assist legitimate westbound travelers, especially women and children traveling alone.

Travelers Aid operated a program that connected hitchhikers so they could travel together more safely and later established the Airport Ambassador program at Lindbergh Field to welcome and assist travelers arriving in San Diego.
1970's
A program was formed to assist individuals who had been incarcerated with transportation to obtain work and other necessities upon release.
